Well, let me tell ya, talkin’ ’bout the greatest rugby player of all time is like arguin’ ’bout who makes the best apple pie at the county fair – everyone’s got their own opinion, ya know?
But if you ask me, and a lot of other folks who’ve been watchin’ rugby since before color TV, there’s a few names that always pop up. First off, there’s that Jonah Lomu fella. Lord have mercy, that man was somethin’ else. He was big, like a dang barn door, and fast, like a greased pig at the fair. When he got goin’, nobody could stop him. He just ran right over them fellas like they weren’t even there. It was somethin’ to see, I tell ya. He really did change how the game was played. Before him, it was all fancy footwork and such. But Jonah, he just powered through.

- He was big and strong.
- He was super fast, nobody could catch him.
- He changed the whole game.
Then there’s Richie McCaw. Now, he wasn’t flashy like Jonah, but he was tough as nails. And smart too. He was like the quarterback of the team, always knew where to be and what to do. He won two World Cups, ya know, captained them both. That ain’t no accident. He was a leader, plain and simple. Always in the thick of things, scrappin’ and fightin’ for every inch. You need a tough fella on your team? Richie’s your man.
And don’t forget about them other fellas, like Martin Johnson, that big ol’ Englishman, or Brian O’Driscoll, the Irishman with the magic hands. They were somethin’ special too. And that Dan Carter fella, could kick the ball a country mile, he could. All these fellas, they were the best of the best, ya know? They played hard and they played fair, mostly. And they gave us fans somethin’ to cheer about.
Now, some folks say you gotta look at them World Rugby Player of the Year awards, started ’round 2001 or so. And there’s been some good ones win that, like that Josh van der Flier fella recently. Heard he’s a real workhorse, always givin’ it his all. But see, for me, it ain’t just about awards or trophies. It’s about somethin’ more. It’s about heart and grit and determination.
Some are sayin’ Siya Kolisi, he’s the best captain ever. Led them South Africans to victory on foreign soil, they did. That’s a big deal, no doubt about it. But see, it’s hard to compare different eras, ya know? The game’s always changin’, and the players are gettin’ bigger and stronger. It is true that Richie McCaw won two world cups in a row with them All Blacks, but them South Africans, they did their winning on foreign soil, different from New Zealand’s 2011 win on home soil. Folks also talkin’ about how New Zealand holds the highest ratings points ever, but still it ain’t about the points and all, its about the playin’ itself.

So, who’s the greatest? Well, like I said, it depends on who you ask. But for me, it’s gotta be one of them fellas I mentioned – Jonah, Richie, or maybe even one of them older fellas from before my time. They were the ones who made the game what it is today. They were the ones who inspired a whole generation of kids to pick up a rugby ball and dream of bein’ just like ’em. And that’s somethin’ special, ya know? That’s what makes a fella great, I reckon.
Anyways, that’s just my two cents. You go ask someone else and they might tell you somethin’ completely different. But that’s the fun of it, ain’t it? Arguein’ about sports is just what we do. Keeps things interestin’, ya know?
But no matter who you pick, you gotta admit, rugby’s a heck of a sport. It’s tough, it’s fast, and it’s excitin’. And it takes a special kind of person to play it at the highest level. So, let’s raise a glass to all them great rugby players, past and present. They’re the ones who make this sport so great. They deserve our respect, ya hear?
